Finding Our Way

This introduction to this book may seem a bit odd. The title is “The Drum” and yet there is a picture of a compass set here.

A short story is required. The idea for this book has been percolating for about two years now. It began with a simple question as I walked along the paths at Camp Encounter. That question was “How do we find our way?”

I was with a group of teens and we had just finished a very emotional talk where many frustrations, worries, and thanks were shared. I wondered how I got to where I was. I am fairly successful at my job. I do well as a father and a husband. What led me to this place in time to share with these kids?

And what was leading them? How would they find there way?

I’ve made several trips. Experienced many different things. I’ve learned much more than I could have ever expected. The mystery of how we find a path in life is still with me. It seems to grow in complexity and intrigue the more I learn.

The drum and the compass are intimately linked. The compass gives us a sense a direction. It works in many different situations and environments. It only errs if we ignore our surroundings or use it incorrectly. Many times we forget to look at it.

As for the drum. I hope that you can learn more about it later as people contribute to this book.

I’m looking for contributors. I’m specifically looking for people to supply their stories about how they found their way. It would be best if you could related it as a story. A metaphor is better. If you are not sure, just be patient and see what shows up here. I have my own ideas. I hope you enjoy them. But, I also have a feeling this work will be much better if I keep my contributions to a minimum.

In the meantime, listen for that drum. It is often faint. It is rarely loud. Once you hear it you will recognize it. Otherwise, check your compass.
